How ChatGPT decides which Mauritian hotels to recommend

Why some hotels and villas show up when travellers ask AI where to stay in Mauritius, and the practical steps that make your property easier to recommend.

In shortAI assistants recommend the places they can understand and verify. Clear pages, consistent details across the web, real reviews and specific answers to traveller questions make your property far easier to recommend.

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews for "a quiet boutique hotel in the north of Mauritius" and you get a short list, not ten pages of links. For a hotel or villa, being on that list is the new front page. So how does an AI assistant decide who makes it?

AI assistants recommend what they can understand

Large language models build answers from what they have learned and, increasingly, from what they look up live on the web. Either way, they lean on sources that describe a place clearly and consistently. If your website is vague, slow or built mostly of images, the assistant has very little to work with, and it will quote someone else instead: a booking platform, a travel blog or a competitor.

Five signals worth working on

1. Pages that answer real questions

Travellers ask specific things: Is it family friendly? How far is the airport? Is the beach good for swimming? Is there a kids' club? Write a clear, honest answer to each on your own site, in plain text. A good FAQ page and detailed room pages give an assistant exactly the facts it needs.

2. Consistent facts everywhere

Your name, address, star rating, room count and contact details should match across your website, Google Business Profile, booking platforms and directories. Conflicting details make you harder to trust and harder to recommend.

3. Structured data

Schema markup (for example Hotel, LodgingBusiness and FAQPage) labels your content in a format machines read easily: location, amenities, price range, check-in times. It is invisible to guests and very useful to search engines and AI systems.

4. Reviews and third-party mentions

Assistants often reflect what others say about you: guest reviews, travel articles and local guides. Encourage recent, detailed reviews and earn mentions in the places travellers read.

5. A site that loads fast and reads well

Speed, mobile layout and accessible text help people and crawlers alike. If a page is hard to load or parse, it is less likely to be used as a source.
